Seven Olympic medals in the pool — more than any other African athlete has won — and in 2025 she became the first woman and the first African elected President of the International Olympic Committee.
Kirsty Leigh Coventry was born in Harare in 1983 and swam at five Olympic Games. She won gold in the 200 metres backstroke at Athens in 2004 and again at Beijing in 2008, and took silver in the 100 metres backstroke at both. Beijing brought two further silvers in the individual medleys, and Athens a bronze, for a career total of seven — two gold, four silver and one bronze. It is the largest haul by any African Olympian, and for several years she held the world record in the 200 metres backstroke.
At the Athens games she carried Zimbabwe's flag, and her medals amounted to the country's entire Olympic return from those two games. She served as Zimbabwe's minister of sport, arts and recreation from 2018, and sat on the International Olympic Committee's athletes' commission and then its executive board.
In March 2025 the IOC elected her its president, outright in the first round against six other candidates. She is the first woman and the first African to hold the office in the organisation's history, and at forty-one the youngest since its founder.
